TANSTAAFL is an acronym for There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. The phrase was originally coined by the economist Milton Friedman to indicate that many ostensibly free things have hidden costs, including opportunity costs and external costs (i.e., costs imposed on third parties).
