Definition

The winner's curse is a phenomenon whereby the winner in an auction typically ends up paying more than the estimated value of the good -- in fact, more than what anybody else is willing to pay for the good. This is particularly true for goods whose value is not intrinsic but rather is determined by what price they fetch on the market.
